She attended the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, NJ, where she received her medical degree. Dr. Brown completed her post-doctorate residency at Howard University in Washington, DC.
Dr. Brown is board certified in Bariatric Medicine and Family Medicine.
She has been in practice for 16 years, 10 of which have been in private practice. She is a member of the American Society Bariatric Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Brown is the President, CEO, and Medical Director of Choices Weight Management, Inc.
Choices Weight Management was born within her family practice and was a result of her own personal struggle with weight management. Dr. Brown maintained a healthy weight through diet and exercise until her early 40’s at which time she noticed her weight rapidly increasing. Despite caloric restriction and exercise, she could not control her weight. Dr. Brown recognized that diet and exercise was only a small piece in the greater puzzle of weight management.
Nutrition is a small point of emphasis for a majority of all physicians other than those specializing in nutrition. Dr. Brown began to research in order to reach her own weight loss goals. This search led her to the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP). The ASBP is a national medical society of licensed physicians whose mission it is to train doctors on the treatment of the obese and overweight, while managing their medical issues. She began to follow their principles of metabolism and nutrition and began to lose weight. The information was presented in a scientific manner and was clinically sound.
Due to the growing epidemic of obesity and the many diseases that are a direct result or directly affected by obesity, the need for this service was great in her medical practice. She began to apply these principles to her patients with overwhelming success. Fascinated by her personal results and those of her patients, she pursued and received her board certification in Bariatric medicine.
As word spread about her weight-loss program it began to grow rapidly, so much so that she closed her medical practice and opened Choices Weight Management, Inc. in October of 2006.
The Choices Weight Management philosophy is that obesity is a disease that is multi-factorial and individual to each person based on their medical history. Her approach in treatment is such. She focuses on correcting metabolism, correcting dehydration, correcting vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and reversing low-protein states.
Choices Weight Management emphasizes low glycemic eating, ridding the body of excess salt and water, and reducing overall caloric intake.
